BIRTH CERTIFICATE NIGERIA

The National Population Commission (NPC) is a federal agency that exclusively issues birth certificate attestation to individuals aged 17 and older who were born in Nigeria. The NPC registers births and deaths. Children under 17 are entitled to obtain birth certificates.

It is the only certificate issued by the NPC recognized for verifying births in Nigeria by all authorities. The certificate may also be required by any foreign governments and embassies to confirm the place of birth and age of a person born in Nigeria for any purpose.

Procedure & Steps for Attestation of Birth Certificate

To obtain an attestation of birth certificate, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Age Limit: Attestation is available only to individuals aged 17 and above. Those under 17 can only apply for a standard birth certificate.
• National Identification Number (NIN): The unique National Identification Number is necessary to expedite the process. Applicants without a NIN will receive a temporary Birth ID. Therefore, to commence the application, the applicant must obtain NIN. Applicants born in Nigeria but currently residing abroad can also obtain NIN from any overseas designation processing NIN.
• Affidavit: Applicants must submit an affidavit to the NPC. This document must include the applicant’s place and date of birth, parental details and origins, and the applicant’s address. The affidavit must be properly stamped.
• Phone Number: The applicant must provide a valid and active phone number.
• Payment: Official fees must be paid through the NPC portal during application.

The steps to obtain a birth certificate attestation are as follows:

1. Online Application: Applicants can initiate their application online if they have all the necessary documents. They can submit their details and required documents, such as an Affidavit of Age Declaration, through the online portal.
2. Parental Details: The details of the applicant’s parents must be uploaded. After the applicant completes and submits all the necessary information, the NPC will review the application accordingly.
3. Review and Issuance: Once the details are accurately filled and submitted, the NPC will review the application before issuing the certificate.

The only valid and official birth certificate or attestation of the birth certificate is the one issued by the NPC. Certificates purportedly issued by religious bodies or hospitals are not recognized as official documents.

PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING BIRTH CERTIFICATE IN NIGERIA

The applicant seeking to process a birth certificate must be under 17 years old to apply for the birth certificate. The applicant can be commenced online via the NPC portal. The birth certificate is for children born in Nigeria and who already have an NIN. At least one of the parents must be a Nigerian citizen.

In conclusion, the verification process for the attestation of the birth certificate and birth certificate may take a few days. The NPC is currently the only statutory organization in charge of issuing birth documents in Nigeria, and any birth documents not issued by the NPC in Nigeria may not be accepted for any official purposes.
